Arab Alabama was incorporated in 1892 and is located in Cullman and Marshall counties in North Alabama. Arab is located 20 minutes south of Redstone Arsenal. The area is rich in heritage and history with unique locally owned shops, theaters, live music and several quaint diners. The name of the town was an unintentional misspelling by the U.S. Postal Service in 1882 of the city’s intended name, taken from Arad Thompson, the son of the town founder and first postmaster Stephen Tuttle Thompson. Two other names for the town were sent to the Postal Service for consideration: “Ink” and “Bird”. Arab has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.
Arab Alabama Demographics
At the 2000 census there were 7,174 people in 3,012 households, including 2,075 families, in the city. The population density was 561.8 inhabitants per square mile. There were 3,223 housing units at an average density of 252.4 square miles. The racial makeup of the city was 98.29% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.66% were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The Arab Alabama Historic Village
Located in Arab City Park is a tribute to the pioneer people who settled and built the area. The City of Arab and the Arab Historical Society continue to develop the village which has 10 buildings furnished with items through the 1940’s and portrays a rural community of that time. The buildings are open March-October on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 am to 3 pm and Saturday from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Arab Alabama City Park
has several special events throughout the year; Back When Day in April, Arab Community Fair in September and Santa in the Park the Friday after Thanksgiving. On November 11th, 2000 a community veterans memorial was dedicated at the park entrance. The memorial is a tribute to the men and women of this community who served their country. The memorial was erected by the city government to honor all veterans and especially in memory of those who gave their all. The black marble monument includes bronze plaques commemorating each branch of service.

(From Huntsville) Take U.S. Highway 231 South into Arab. Turn left on 7th Avenue NW (McDonald’s on left), then right onto Main Street. Continue traveling south through 2 traffic lights. Turn left onto Shoal Creek Trail NE. Park is approximately 1 mile on right.
(From Cullman) Take AL Highway 69 into Arab. Turn left onto Main Street, then right on Shoal Creek Trail NE. Park is approximately 1 mile on right.
(From Guntersville) Take AL Highway 69 into Arab. Turn left onto Main Street, then right on Shoal Creek Trail NE. Park is approximately 1 mile on right.
Arab Alabama City Schools
Arab Alabama city schools are ranked number four in the state, offering one of the best school districts in Alabama. The high school offers classes in pre-engineering, precision machining technology, agri-science, drafting and a robotics program incorporating engineering skills to create robotic equipment. Arab’s HOSA Medical Science is nationally recognized, the Medical Scholar’s Bowl has won the state competition for 25 years. The City of Arab supports the arts and the Mountain Valley Arts Council, a nonprofit organization which is dedicated to the advancement of the arts. The organization was founded in 1971. There is mural downtown created by Arab High School art students.
Arab Alabama Events & Points of Interest
Arab Historic Village
Located on the grounds of the Arab City Park. Begun in 1991, the village includes ten buildings representing different historical eras from the late nineteenth century through the 1940s. It hosts such events as “Back When Day,” held annually on the last Saturday in April and featuring demonstrations of quilting, milling corn, and blacksmithing; “Fall Fest,” which is held the second Saturday in September and features arts and crafts and food vendors; and “Santa in the Park,” which is held the first Friday after Thanksgiving.
The Poke Salat Bluegrass Festival
The Poke Salat Bluegrass Festival is held in downtown Arab on the third Saturday in May. The name refers to the folk term for a salad made from pokeweed, a toxic plant that requires special preparation to make is safe for consumption.
