Colbert County has a population of 54,428. The county seat is Tuscumbia.
Colbert County gets its name is in honor of brothers George and Levi Colbert, Chickasaw Indian chiefs.

It is also the location of Ivy Green, the birthplace of noted author Helen Keller. Colbert County is also home of the towns Sheffield and Muscle Shoals where many popular musicians such as Aretha Franklin and the Rolling Stones recorded music. Colbert County is the home of the Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard established in 1937.

Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard

You can find the Coon Dog Cemetery 7 miles west of Tuscumbia on U.S. Hwy 72. Turn left on Alabama Hwy 247, and travel approximately 12 miles. Then turn right, and follow the signs. For more information and directions contact Janice Williams with the The Friends of the Coon Dog Cemetery, Inc.:

Muscle Shoals AL

Muscle Shoals is the largest city in Colbert County. Its population is 13,146.


Both the city and the Florence-Muscle Shoals Metropolitan Area (including four cities in Colbert and Lauderdale counties) are commonly called "the Shoals". Northwest Alabama Regional Airport serves the Shoals region.

Since the 1960s the city has been known for the "Muscle Shoals Sound", as local recording studios produced hit records that shaped the history of popular music.

Natchez Trace Parkway

A National Scenic Byway and All American Road, 444 miles long stretching from Natchez, Mississippi to Nashville Tennessee. Key sites along the 33 miles of the Natchez Trace in Alabama include Colbert Ferry, Buzzard Roost Spring and Freedom Hills Overlook. The Colbert Ferry site offers restrooms, picnic area, swimming, fishing, boat launch, bike only campground at Milepost 327. The Parkway is a designated bike route.

Sheffield AL

Sheffield is a city in Colbert County, Alabama, United States, and is included in The Shoals metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 9,039. Sheffield is the birthplace of "country-soul pioneer" and songwriter Arthur Alexander, French horn player Willie Ruff, notable attorney, actor, former senator and presidential contender Fred Thompson, Watergate committee U.S. Senator Howell Heflin and U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, whose father was working in nearby Athens when he was born in Sheffield. It sometimes is referred to as "the City of Senators" from the birthing of Howell, McConnell and Thompson within its borders, and Col. Harland Sanders worked in the Sheffield depot for Southern Railway in the 1900s. It is also home to the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio where many popular 20th century musicians recorded their work, including Alexander and Ruff. It is the site of historic Helen Keller Hospital, formerly known as Colbert County Hospital and originally constructed in 1921. It was changed to Helen Keller Hospital in 1979, and Keller's birthplace Ivy Green is located less than one mile southwest of the hospital in adjacent Tuscumbia.

Tuscumbia

Tuscumbia is the county seat of Colbert County, located in the Northwest corner of the state. This strategic location places Tuscumbia at the hub of the great Tennessee River Valley.


Tuscumbia is strategically located with easy access to major southeast cities. Highway accessibility is excellent with four lane traffic on U.S. highways 43 and 72. Interstate 65 is only 45 miles southeast of the city.


A regional airport is located 3 miles east of Tuscumbia in Muscle Shoals.


With a population of 8,423, the city offers its residents the comfortable atmosphere of a small town, but includes a large shopping and industrial area. Tuscumbia has the advantage of being part of the greater Shoals area, which encompasses Sheffield, Muscle Shoals and Florence.
