Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo History

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo opened in June 1989 in Gulf Shores, Alabama, United States as Zooland Animal Park. It is operated by the Zoo Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and relies on admissions, memberships and contributions for its funding. It was the basis of the Animal Planet show The Little Zoo That Could.

The zoo is several blocks north of the beach and is home to more than 290 animals including lions, tigers, bears, monkeys, and macaws. It includes a petting zoo, reptile house, and aviary, as well as daily animal shows in the summer.

Doodle and Boo Petting Zoo & Aviary is the perfect place for a fun-filled family outing. At this zoo, visitors will have the opportunity to experience hands-on interaction with the animals and get to view the beautiful birds in the aviary. Alabama Wildlife Center

Alabama Wildlife Center is Alabama’s oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation facility and a leader in the rehabilitation of wild birds. Harmony Park Safari

Harmony Park Safari is a “drive-thru” animal park that requires its visitors to remain in their car on the 2-mile route to see many exotic animals, which include zebras, ostriches, buffalo, etc. Visitors will enjoy hand feeding the animals as they walk straight up to their car window(s). Noccalula Falls Park

Noccalula Falls Park features a petting zoo, mini-golf course, the Gilliland-Reese Covered Bridge (built 1899) and a replica 1863 C. P. Huntington train ride. The main feature of the park is a notable 90-foot waterfall with a gorge trail winding through its basin and past caves, an aboriginal fort, an abandoned dam, pioneer homestead, and Civil War carvings.

Established in 1980, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is a 7,000-acre wildlife habitat for migratory birds, sea turtles and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. Birmingham Zoo

The Birmingham Zoo is a zoological park that opened in 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama. The 122-acre (49 ha) zoo is home to almost 800 animals representing over 200 species, including many endangered species from six continents. It is located, along with the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, in Lane Park, a 200-acre (81 ha) city-owned park near the western terminus of U.S. Highway 280 at U.S. Highway 31 on the southern slope of Red Mountain.

All of the alligators were rescued from dangerous situations. From an elevated platform, visitors will get a close-up view of over 400 alligators. Visitors will also have an opportunity to hold and feed an alligator.
