]]>Tuscumbia Alabama is a city in and the county seat of Colbert County, Alabama located in the Northwest corner of the state. This strategic location places Tuscumbia at the hub of the great Tennessee River Valley. Tuscumbia was an early center for agriculture, commerce and industry that included the first railroad west of the Allegheny Mountains.

America’s first lady of courage, Helen Keller, was born in Tuscumbia. Her birthplace, known as Ivy Green, is open daily for tours. William Gibson’s famous play, “The Miracle Worker”, is presented each summer by talented local performers.
The Alabama Music Hall of Fame, located on Hwy. 72 in Tuscumbia, showcases the musical accomplishments of Alabama natives. From opera to rythym and blues, from rock and roll to country and western, you’ll be amazed at the people you have heard of who are from Alabama.
Spring Park provides a beautiful setting for picnics, arts and crafts shows, and recreation for the entire family. Located in the heart of downtown, Spring Park sets the tone for the lifestyle that represents Tuscumbia-relaxed and comfortable.
Tuscumbia is the site for the first railroad west of the Allegheny Mountains completed in the 1830s. Tuscumbia Depot was built in 1888 by the Memphis and Charleston Railroad as a division headquarters. Currently it is being restored to its original 1888 condition.
Belle Mont Mansion, circa 1828, is one of Alabama’s most distinguished homes. Featuring neoclassical architecture of Jeffersonian-Palladian style, it is owned by the Alabama Historical Commission.Coon Dog CemeteryIn Coon Dog Cemetery, over 100 coon dogs have been laid to rest in the scenic “Freedom Hills”. Unique headstones and epitaphs pay tribute to man’s best friend. “Troop” was the first dog buried there in 1937.
The Tennessee Valley Art Center provides rotating exhibits of the visual arts.
The Colbert County Courthouse, built 1881-1909, still houses government and serves as the centerpiece for the surrounding Tuscumbia National Register Historic District which showcases a large selection of 19th century architecture.
The Cane Creek Canyon Reserve is a 700-acre privately protected and maintained scenic natural area in the Little Mountain region of Colbert County. The area has been granted official status as a nature preserve through a conservation easement with the Nature Conservancy of Alabama.
The Coldwater Stagecoach Stop is a one-room log cabin that houses articles associated with frontier living and dates back to pioneer days (ca 1815-1820).
Beautiful nine-hole golf course located at 800 Woodmont Drive. It features 6,370 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 76.0 and it has a slope rating of 102. Open since 1951.
3500 acres of horseback riding with horse facilities; grain silos for lodging; campground; and unique restaurant – Rattlesnake Saloon.
Off-roading activities spread over 1,000 acres (40 trails). Open every first and third weekend.

Cane Creek Nature Preserve is in Colbert County Alabama just outside of Russellville Alabama. Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve is a 6.2 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Tuscumbia, Alabama that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from February until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Privately owned scenic natural area open to the public at no charge. A cooperative project with The Nature Conservancy of Alabama.

]]>Colbert County gets its name is in honor of brothers George and Levi Colbert, Chickasaw Indian chiefs.
It is also the location of Ivy Green, the birthplace of noted author Helen Keller. Colbert County is also home of the towns Sheffield and Muscle Shoals where many popular musicians such as Aretha Franklin and the Rolling Stones recorded music. Colbert County is the home of the Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard established in 1937.
