Alabama has a notable history as a gold producing state and one of the most gold rich states east of the Mississippi. Major gold discoveries were made in 1830 at Chestnut Creek and Blue Creek in Alabama followed by discoveries in many counties within the state. Both placer deposits and lode was discovered in Alabama within the state’s gold belt.
The historical gold boom in Alabama left sufficient gold in Alabama for those willing to spend a little time in pursuit of the precious metal. Prospecting opportunities exist on public land in the Talladega National Forest, but most of the gold will be found on private property requiring permission from the landowner.
