Evergreen, Alabama is a quiet southern town about halfway between Mobile and Montgomery just off Interstate 65. Evergreen became the county seat in 1866 after the previous seat, Sparta, was burned in a federal raid during the Civil War and because Evergreen was more centrally located in the county.

Conecuh County was established by Alabama on February 13, 1818. Some of its territory was taken in 1868 by the Republican state legislature during the Reconstruction era to establish Escambia County.
