Clanton, Alabama is the county seat of Chilton County. Clanton is near the site of the geographic center of the U.S state of Alabama. Clanton, Alabama, a growing city with a rich history, is the seat of Chilton County Alabama, the state’s largest producer of peaches. Besides peaches, some of our most remarkable natural resources are a beautiful landscape and a friendly small-town atmosphere.
Located in the center of Alabama on Interstate 65, halfway between the cities of Birmingham and Montgomery, Clanton is a location ripe for business and industrial development. It is Clanton’s proximity to the new automobile plants in the state that has made our city the site of two automotive parts manufacturers since 1999.
Clanton Alabama History
The town was founded by Alfred Baker in 1868, when Chilton County was formed. Prior to establishment in 1868, the Town of Clanton was known as the community of “Goose Pond”. Baker County was renamed to Chilton County and the community of “Goose Pond” became the Town of Clanton. Clanton was named in honor of General James H. Clanton, a brigadier in the Confederate States Army, and was incorporated on April 23, 1873. Baker was also elected first mayor of the town.
During World War II, a small German prisoner of war camp was located in Clanton.
