Gold Mining in Alabama
Alabama’s first major gold strike occurred in 1830 at Chilton County Alabama’s Blue Creek and Chestnut Creek. Gold has been found throughout Talladega, Tallapoosa, Chambers, Coosa, Clay, Chilton, Elmore, Cleburne, and Randolph Counties.
Thousands of miners pr0spected as independents and hundreds worked in the mines which grew in number until the Civil War caused the mining industry to halt. Then, from about 1930 until 1942, the mines were heavily worked again. It has been estimated that 80,000 ounces of gold came from Alabama mines.
