Wade Mountain Nature Preserve offers more than 11 miles of single-track climbs, scenic vistas and waterfalls. At 2.1 miles, Wade Mountain biking trail is the longest and one of the best biking trails on Wade Mountain.One of five land preserves owned and maintained by the Land Trust of North Alabama, Wade Mountain Preserve has set aside 843 acres of upper woodland forest, capped with the “Devil’s Racetrack”, a semi-arid micro-climate with an abundance of wildflowers and fossils. You can bike and hike past Civil War fortifications and catch the view from the top. The trail system was created by and is maintained by volunteers. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama, located a few miles from the western Pulaski Pike trailhead, is but one of several corporations who encourage employees to volunteer time for Trail Care Crew workdays.
Leaving from the trailhead on Spragins Hollow Road, the initial climb up Devil’s Racetrack trail is about 200 feet in elevation and moderate in difficulty. Once at the top, the trails branch off, so taking a map with you is a must. This trail frequently experiences fallen trees, washouts and has very rocky sections. The trail is shared with hikers and horseback riders and is free to use.
No camping, fires, or rappelling. Pets welcome, but must remain on leash. Please practice Leave No Trace Principles.
Directions: From downtown Huntsville, take Memorial parkway north past Alabama A&M, cross Winchester Road and take the first left turn, Hollow Road. Follow Hollow Road west to Spragins Hollow Road, following it until you see the parking area on your right.
