Evergreen, Alabama is a quiet southern town about halfway between Mobile and Montgomery just off Interstate 65. Evergreen became the county seat in 1866 after the previous seat, Sparta, was burned in a federal raid during the Civil War and because Evergreen was more centrally located in the county.
Clarkesville, also spelled Clarksville, is a ghost town in Clarke County. It was the county seat of Clarke County until 1831. A small modern community, roughly a mile from the old site, presently calls itself Clarksville.
